The Allen County Communications Center staff includes 1 Tele-Communications Director and 10 Tele-Communications Operators. This section is the E-9-1-1 answering point for all of the Allen County area. It provides emergency and non-emergency radio and telephone communications for the Iola Police Department, Allen County Sheriff’s Department, Allen County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Iola Fire Department and Allen County Volunteer Fire Department, while providing support to the cities of Humboldt, LaHarpe, and Moran Police Department’s and Volunteer Fire Department’s. The Emergency Response Center also assists in dispatching after business hours for Iola Public Works, and has capability of communicating with officers from the Kansas Highway Patrol and Kansas Wild Life and Parks.
In order to provide reliable communications and quality customer service, the communications section concentrates on both the technology and training to facilitate the efficient operation of the center. Communications Operators receive a minimum of 10 weeks of initial training from certified Communications Training Officers (CTO). Continuing education is provided to employees, in several different forms, throughout the year. All Communications Operators are certified with the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD).
Communications Operators utilize an Enhanced 9-1-1 (E911) system with Reverse 9-1-1 (CODE RED) capabilities, and Computer-Aided-Dispatch (CAD) system to more effectively and expeditiously perform their duties. These systems aid in quickly determining the location of an incident; what type of units to dispatch to the incident; the on-going status of the incident; and the units which responded.
