Community Resources
The Iola Police Department embraces community policing by involving the community for solutions to crime. One of the larger sources of crime in our community comes from the juvenile population. The solution was to develop programs which involved positive interaction between law enforcement officers and juveniles at an early age and provide worth while activities in which juveniles could take part. The Iola Police Department has developed several programs and events to build the relationship between the Iola community and the police department. The Community Resource Officer involves the community to accomplish many of these programs. Among these programs and events are the D.A.R.E. program, the Hooked on Fishing Not On Drugs Fishing Derby, "Fun Day", "Project Care", and is a proud sponsor of the "Beat the Heat" Program.

Project Care program helps families in Allen County have a brighter Christmas sponsored by The Iola Police Department. Funding for Project Care is raised through donations from private citizens and local businesses. From Thanksgiving until Christmas, "Project Care Angels" are sold at local convenient stores. For a $1.00 donation, one can purchase a paper angel, place their name on it, and the store then displays the angel through the holiday season. To qualify for assistance of Project Care, you must meet income guidelines and live in Allen County.

Each year the Iola Police Department with the help of others, puts on the annual "Fun Day" event. The event employs resources from many local businesses and involves the help of the Iola Fire Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Olathe Police Department, and the Allen County Sheriff's Department. "Fun Day" is geared toward elementary school age children. The theme of the day teaches children how to be safe. "Fun Day" schedule of events included a narcotics canine demonstration, Ident-a-Kid fingerprinting, "Stop, Drop and Roll", Roll-over vehicle safety belt demonstration, Bike Rodeo, Scavenger Hunt, and a special appearance from "McGruff" the crime dog and "Firepup". Prizes, including brand new boy's and girl's bicycles made available from donations by local businesses were also given away.
