Street & Alley

The Street and Alley Department maintains about 117 lane miles of streets, as well as alleys. The largest annual project is the street sealing program, where crews fill cracks and chip/seal streets on a rotating basis. Other jobs include:

  • Snow removal
  • Patching potholes
  • Maintenance of equipment
  • Cleaning and maintaining storm sewers
  • Street sweeping
  • Painting crosswalks, lane and other roadway markings
  • Cleaning catch basins
  • Surveying traffic and street signs for replacement
  • Locating and removing dead trees on alleys and easements
  • Two Clean-Up Weeks per year, in which residents have material picked up from their property and hauled to the landfill

Snow Removal Policy

Snow plowing and sand/salt treatment of city streets during winter storms are prioritized by Streets and Alleys personnel. Main thoroughfares through town and emergency routes are the first to be treated, followed by access to schools, and secondary roadways. Emergency routes include access to nursing facilities, the hospital, public works facilities, and police and fire stations.
